The Little egret – Egretta garzetta is a small species of heron of the wading-bird Family Ardeidae and the Order Pelecaniformes, and is widespread around the Old World. It is largely resident across Africa, Arabian coasts, S Asia, India, SE Asia and Australasia, but has a migrant population which extends N into S Europe, Central and E Asia. In the AWB Region there are small dispersed summer breeding populations in the Levant, Turkey, the S Caucasus and NW Iran. Equally there are small dispersed wintering areas in Azerbaijan, Turkey, S Iraq, S Levant, Sinai, Egypt, the Maghreb states and coastal Western Sahara. However the coastal areas of the N African states, Arabia and coastal Iran together with the s s African Sahel states are the main areas where it is resident.
